it depends how annoying hiss is in it. Can u show some? EQ is always good start to cut hi and for example X-noise.
You must remember that every time u will try to remove noise it will always end up messing around with the overall quality.

iZotope RX has several different modes of noise reduction. They give you a 10 day demo for the download.
iZotope rx will blow everyones mind when it comes to tape hiss removal its flexible though as well as being good too

Waves Z-noise is also great alternative, tho its not stand-alone plugin so youll need some daw software that supports third party plugins (VSTs)

also try using lowpass filter along with these programs suggested above.

            PCI audio card: M-audiophile 2496 http://www.google.com/products/catal...w=1158&bih=751

            Connecting routine:
Connect outputs to inputs of the audio card (left and right)
open some recording program like Audacity or Sony SoundForge, in options select stereo inputs of your sound card, click ok, press play on your tape player, and hit the record button in program.

Tapes do tend to lose some of high-frequency response and become gluey if they are not played in over 10 years.
