  • DirectX 12 Announced at GDC 2014, Works Across All Microsoft Platforms

DirectX 12 has been revealed at GDC 2014 in San Francisco today, showcasing the next-gen version in Microsoft's DirectX API. Apparently, DirectX is designed to work across all Microsoft platforms.

Microsoft's Graphics Development Manager Anuj Gosalia confirmed DirectX 12's compatibility with all MS platforms, meaning that the production capabilities and benefits promised by the new tech will be available for Xbox One. It'll work across "all Microsoft platforms," including "the lowest of smartphones, to game consoles, to the highest-end graphics cards," Gosalia stated.

According to Microsoft, DirectX 12 halves overall CPU utilisation compared to DX11, spreading workloads more efficiently across CPU cores. It'll grant developers more control over graphics memory, and consequently create additional space to achieve more using the tech. Potentially great news for Xbox One.

There's currently no release date for DirectX 12, though it has been touted for holiday 2015, with a preview release this year.
