  • Minnesota Vikings To Cut Quarterback Donovan McNabb: Report

NFL vet, Donovan McNabb, had has a rough couple years in the league, and it’s not getting any better.

After his starting position with the Minnesota Vikings was given to rookie Christian Ponder back in October, the veteran quarterback has been sitting on the bench. And now, he’s set to be released from the team, reports ESPN.

The networks says the team will release McNabb later Thursday (December 1).

McNabb was not at practice during the portion which is open to the media Thursday. Although he was seen in the locker room earlier in the day, he did not accompany the team to practice in preparation for Sunday’s home game against Denver.

At press time nothing has been confirmed, nor has the team commented on his absence from practice.

The Vikings acquired McNabb in the offseason from Washington. But, he was benched by Vikings coach Leslie Frazier in mid-October, with Ponder taking the reins as starting QB and it’s been that way since. When McNabb was pulled from the lineup, the Vikings were 1-5. Ponder hasn’t fared any better either — they are 1-4 with the rookie as the starter and remain in last place in the NFC North.

“I know I have a lot of football left in me,” McNabb said at the time of his benching.

The Redskins picked up McNabb in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2010. Despite signing him to a five-year contract extension, worth as much as $88 million, the QB was demoted to third string in December 2010 … and was eventually sent to the Vikings, who had high hopes for McNabb.

Now, those hopes are gone, and McNabb’s future is currently unknown.

ESPN speculates that when McNabb reaches waivers on Friday (December 2), Dallas (21st waiver) and Chicago (24th) could put in a claim. Houston also is in the market for quarterback help.
