  • StarCraft II Says It’s Sorry With a Free Name Change for Everyone

Battle.net had hinted at plans for a name-changing service—for a fee—in StarCraft II some time ago but it never materialized. With the paid name-change option deprioritized and unlikely to happen anytime soon, Battle.net is saying sorry by giving everyone a free name-change.

"The fact that we didn't keep you updated when we deprioritized the feature was a mistake, and we aim to do a much better job of keeping you informed in the future," The StarCraft II team said in an official blog post yesterday.

Originally they'd intended to offer a paid name-changing service. But few used a free name change that was initially offered and that, coupled with the introduction of Battle Tags and the need to integrate them with character names, "and our increasing focus on completing StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm," led the paid name change service to be placed on the back-back burner.

The free name change may be accessed by logging into Account Management and choosing the game license screen for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty The "Character Name Change" button at the bottom takes care of it.

The blog post said there should be more info on a paid name change service once Heart of the Swarm releases in March.
