Personally, while I can respect the influence they had, and respect the accomplishments, I find their music unsatisfactory to say the least. I enjoy music from a very broad range of genres, however 90% of what the Beatles recorded I simply do not consider that great. I'm nearly 30 years old so I'm more then familiar with their work, however let's be realistic here. The Beatles' last album was released in 1969. Nineteen... Sixty... Nine... Ya'll do realize this was over 40 years ago correct? After the break up Paul McCartney didn't exactly tear up the music charts either... in fact, I'd wager that the only song that most anyone could name or is familiar with is "Say Say Say" and that's simply because it was a Michael Jackson song. That hit was recorded during the mid 80's, so again, unless you were an 80's baby there isn't much reason to even be aware of that track either. As for the topic at hand, everyone has heard of the Beatles, it's nearly impossible to have not heard of the group. However if you're not a fan of there music, why would anyone care to know the band members? As I stated before, Paul McCartney didn't exactly tear up the charts following the Beatles break up, so there's little reason to know who he is after 1970. In all honesty, he's been known more for his tabloid escapades for the past 2 decades rather then his music.
Finally, let's be honest.. while most of you UK members may regard Paul McCartney as a celebrity and someone everyone should know, I'd wager he hardly ranks noteworthy at all in the US anymore by anyone under the age of 50. Again, the Beatles as a group will live on for ever, and their music for better or worse will remain highly revered... but individually, they don't exactly stand out as superstars on their own merits. So, when someone under the age of 20 says "Who the hell is Paul McCartney" it's an honest question, and one that's not "sad" or "terrible", but simply a reminder that we don't live in the 1960's, 70's 80's or even 90's anymore, It's 2012, and while "The Beatles" live on... the 4 men who made up the group are beginning to fade into history.

You have to take their age into consideration. If they are over 13 and don't know then they are retarded. Under and I'll accept their ignorance.

Willing to bet most of those kids were born in 2000 or after. Imma admit that I haven't really delved into his discography or much of the Beatles outside of Abbey Road or St. Peppers, but you can't call yourself a music fan and NOT know who this guy is.
