I don't buy the "Old" music argument or even a fan argument. As I'm not, there are other 60s artists I much prefer (The Beach Boys and The Zombies to name a few). I was born in the 1980s, and that was long after the Beatles were kings of the world. The fact remains that they wrote great music and should be considered icons because along with them and the Beach Boys they created the format for rock and pop music that exists to this day before that it was largly non-album singles with LPs made of a single or two, some standard covers and make novelty or joke song or two. They could actually write an amazing song.

As much as the Grammy Awards blow they are supposed to be honoring the best in music and as someone that considers themselves a fan of music I think it should be acknowledged the impact the man had, and all the time. He made some really genius pop music. I get about 100 solicitations from bands and artsists a week from PR firms and independent record labels, there is SO much music being made today I think people forget what it actually sounds like to create a timeless piece of music.

An artist like Bessie Smith is even older but does that mean I shouldn't give it up for her cuz she was cutting records in the 1930s? No. People live in a world of instant gratifaction and consumption with a new piece of mindless drivel being pumped out every 15 seconds.
